LiveJournal Major Notes: Get your holiday fix! [Dec. 23rd, 2009|11:37 am]

Holiday debuggery

We know there were a few kinks with the holiday promotion. We've been working very hard to get them ironed out. If you have a paid/permanent account, keep on sending those coupons. Here's an update:

  • If you were unable to send out multiple coupons at a time, please perform a hard refresh, and you should be good to go.
  • If you redeemed a coupon to upgrade your account and the balance at checkout was $0 instead of $9.95 or $15, this means your upgrade did not go through (nor were you charged). We've straightened this out, so you can now apply your holiday coupon toward the purchase of an annual paid account.
  • If you tried to redeem a holiday coupon and had trouble using a gift certificate to cover the balance of an annual paid account, we identified the root problem. If this happened to you, you can now use your holiday coupon together with your gift certificate.
  • If the number of holiday coupons you have available suddenly goes up (instead of down), this might be due to recipients declining the coupons, at which point your pool of available coupons will be replenished and, therefore, increase.
  • If you need assistance with holiday coupons or pretty much anything else (well, LiveJournal related), please open a support request and we'll be more than happy to help!

Tweaks

  • There were some initial glitches displaying results on My Guests, but we've worked them out. We hope you'll check out who's been checking you out!
  • Some of you reported formatting issues using the Rich Text Editor (i.e., line breaks were being removed incorrectly). We've implemented a fix! Thanks so much for your patience.

Give a little extra!

We're pleased to report that we've already sold over 100 virtual red ribbons in honor of National AIDS Awareness month. Remember, for each charitable vgift you purchase for $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds to IAVI.org (the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) to fund the development of an HIV vaccine. Once again, we thank you for your generosity.

Celebrate with holiday vGifts!

Stop by the Virtual Gift Shop and share some holiday magic with your LiveJournal friends.

Yule miracle from the hospital [Dec. 21st, 2009|11:18 pm]

[Current Mood | relieved]

Yea, really...And I think you'll agree after you read what happened to me today. Here's a pic of my travel altar set up from the hospital I'm in right now:   You can't see it, but the small chalices have salt and water in them. West is to the Right. I use air as North because that's how I was trained, and it makes sense to me: when you think of the X and Y axis, North being air and masculine lines up with south which is also masculine. I hope that makes sense. So I have my cone incense stick on the North side. I figured this woudl suffice enough to survive the flight. I got the small pentacle at some craft sore, as a christmas item actually. Got the incense stick, my quartz, my bell for fire, since bringing blades to a hospital or on a flight just isn't a good idea. ... it's in the corner of my desk in my room so I'm not worrieda bout it  being touched by staff, the nurses have another table set up for their supplies. So, anyway, why I'm here... Read more... )

Immanion Press/Megalithica Books would like to announce its two newest nonfiction releases! We now have both of these books in stock here at the Green Wolf, so here's the official announcement.

Women's Voices in Magic edited by Brandy Williams is a phenomenal collection of essays from female occultists and magicians. People often think of female magical practitioners as mainly witches and neopagans, and the areas of ceremonial and chaos magic as more male-dominated. The essayists in this collection would like to disagree, some politely, some not! We discuss everything from our historical predecessors to the effects pregnancy has on magic, dealing with discrimination by other occultists for our sex, and how we work to change the assumptions that are made about us. Click here for more details, including a list of essays, and ordering info!

As for our other release--chaos magic has been around for a few decades now, and some would argue that it's long since gone stale, assimilated into a more mainstream, image-oriented form of occultism. Liber 767 vel Boeingus by Josef Karika takes chaos magic back to its exploratory, experimental, and lovingly irreverent roots. Based on the author's fifteen years of practical experience, and written with a good dose of humor, this text includes a wide variety of ideas for magical practice, from new takes on sigils and servitors and technological magic, to innovative ways to work with memories and dopplegangers. Here's where you can find more info, and place your order!

In other news, yes, the deadline for Digging up the Ostrich's Head, the animal sacrifice anthology, blew by a few days ago. I'm still way behind on, well, everything, with holidays in full swing, so if there are still outstanding essays, feel free to let me know--I'll still accept them. I don't have the time right this moment to do a full round of editing, but I am going to try to go through and cull anything that absolutely won't fit, and let folks know whether they have an initial yea or nay.

Bleah. Been feeling low-energy the past few days, going to take it easy now.

Baking [Dec. 21st, 2009|01:24 pm]

So, after the success of my pumpkin pie this past Thanksgiving, I've gotten in the mood to bake more...like I used to back in Oregon. Last week I made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (completely from scratch) and they were so delicious! Even Sky said they were the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies he'd ever eaten. XD

And I think I might bake some peanut butter cookies as a surprise for Sky this afternoon, since they are his favorite kind of cookie. *wonders if these will compare to the cookies last week* I have a lot to live up to. :o

Well, I decided to go ahead and at least get this one batch off my harddrive before it qualifies for Medicare! I had SUCH a heck of a time working with these caps (which were really hard to come by to begin with), so woefully I couldn't do precisely what I wanted with them. *pouts* ANYway, hopefully these aren't too bad, being a few months old and all... ;-)

Christmas and pagans [Dec. 11th, 2009|05:18 pm]

pagan

[straif]
Every year I hear the same thing: Christmas is a pagan holiday, the Christians stole it from us.

That is simply not true. Many of the traditions and ways of celebrating it are pagan in origin, but that does not mean the holiday itself is. As various cultures converted from paganism to Christianity, they brought their seasonal traditions with them. It wasn't always the case that "the evil priests tricked the pagans into making their festivities into Christian ones".

As for the conversions themselves, sometimes it was at knife-point, but more often it was because it was financially or politically expedient. A king, emperor, or chieftain would convert, and then the juicy "government contracts" went to fellow Christians. And sometimes, sometimes, people converted because the faith felt right; it felt like coming home. I hear that all the time from pagans that they felt this way when found their new faith. Why can't it work in the opposite direction?

Christmas is a Christian holiday. It is a celebration of Jesus' birthday. Very likely He was not born in December, and many suggest is was moved to December 25 to coincide with an older, pagan holiday. However, from what I've seen, no one can agree on which pagan holiday. Myself, I believe that part of the reason for the move is that you just need an excuse for a bit of warmth and a bit of a party that time of year.

Christmas is also a secular holiday. It outgrew the chapel and spilled into the Victorian parlor, the city streets, and then the shopping malls. Again, I think it is partly because you need the warmth and a party in the winter.

You might celebrate Yule, Saturnalia, Alban Arthuan, or something else entirely different. You may celebrate the secular Christmas or you may dread it. But even if you don't keep Christmas yourself, your co-worker with the crucifix likely does. If you wish them a merry Christmas, it isn't because it is important to you, but that it is important to them; the wish isn't for you, it is for them. My non-American friends will wish me a happy fourth of July. It isn't their holiday, but they know it means something to me.

There are many Christians that anger me this time of year (but there are also many pagans that embarrass me.) It is easy to find enemies; if you look you will see them even where they aren't. Instead, look for friends and allies.

Tolerance doesn't begin with someone else; it begins with you. You can't demand that someone else change their attitude if you are unwilling to change yours first.

Auction Ending: EA's Handmade Art Piece [Dec. 18th, 2009|05:11 pm]

bonnytymepyrate
Dearest Children,

EA is currently in her cell, surrounded by the piles of beautiful gifts you have given her during this last tour, and occupied with writing a lovely new song about murder, and thus I take this moment to come to you myself bearing news of a very important eBay sale just about to end.

Direct from the Asylum, now presenting!

The ultimate Christmas surprise for true collectors of all things EA:

"Fanny's Loss" Wearable Art Piece

Check the Auction before it's too late!

Created while in her late teens, we offer EA's loving tribute to one of her heroines and most suppressed talents, composer and original Faerie Queen, Fanny Mendelssohn, beloved sister of Felix (whom we all know what EA's very first crush). Each charm on this garland was hand sculpted and contains reproductions of Fanny's several portraits, bits of her compositions, and words from her personal letters as well as notes about her life, then finally adorned with vintage ribbon and flowers. This stunningly beautiful and exquisitely detailed work of art may be worn, displayed on your wall, or both, as you prefer.

This piece is immensly valuable to EA, and, in the spirit of the new year, she has allowed us to offer it to you in the hope that more will become aware of the marvelous woman and underrepresented talent that Fanny was.

Besides, if we don't make more room in the Asylum, we will have no place to put all of these exquisite gifts you keep giving us;)...

Cheerse,

Sir Edward, Ambassador of the League of Plague Rats

P.S.
The Plague: Have you spread it today?

P.P.S.
The Asylum Army: Are You Committed?

P.P.S.
Do you happen to have any crumbs?
